    ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER

Jeff Menzise is a proud graduate of two of our finest HBCUs, receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Fisk University in Psychology and Clinical Psychology, respectively. He finished up his academic training at Howard University majoring in Clinical Psychology with a minor in Developmental Psychology. Along with his Ph.D., Menzise earned a graduate certificate in International Studies with a concentration in Political Science and Information & Culture. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he maintains his professional and social ties to his hometown by serving as a consultant to several grassroots organizations, educators, and senior administrators.

Dr. Menzise is active globally and locally. He has worked with Ministries of Education in both the Caribbean and West Africa, providing professional development for teachers, administrators, families, students, and mental health staff. He is known for his dynamic presentation style, bringing insight to thousands via his community workshops, courses, and lectures. He has most recently been invited to work directly with Taraji P. Henson and her foundation (The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation) during their inaugural conference and benefit banquet held June 7-9, 2019 in Washington, DC. Specifically, Menzise and Henson cohosted a community Town Hall Meeting to address mental health access and overcoming the barriers of stigma and affordability. He also serves on her Advisory Council.

As a scholar, Dr. Menzise has presented a multitude of papers and workshops around the world, and has authored 10 books, numerous articles, and several “Issue Guides” for the Kettering Foundation as a Public Scholar. Menzise has recently teamed up with Dr. Jerome Schiele to update Schiele’s groundbreaking text on culturally competent social work, Human Services and the Afrocentric Paradigm, which will be published by Taylor & Francis in 2022. He has been featured on popular radio and television shows and in national newspapers and magazines; he is also the creator of the hit radio show “Mind on the Matter.” As an international consultant and coach, he has worked with the National Association of Independent Schools’ (NAIS) annual People of Color Conference (POCC), which drew more than 7,000 attendees last year, the Walmart Corporation, the Ministry of Education of St. Kitts & Nevis, the Ministry of Education of The Gambia, and The Trial Lawyers College amongst others.

Dr. Jeff is a mindfulness expert, teaching meditation, yoga, and Qi Gong as a means to improve daily functioning in social, intimate, professional, academic, and athletic contexts. He has developed a brand of social-emotional alignment which incorporates his decades-worth of clinical experience with his holistic and culturally diverse worldview. Most recently, he has developed and received high praise for his “Meditative Athlete” program which has been implemented with both individual clients, as well as with a Maryland-based high school’s basketball teams. The athletic director of Fisk University, Dr. Larry Glover, recently agreed to adopt the program, and he is currently in talks with Cincinnati Public Schools about bringing a series of trainings to the Athletic Directors and Coaches around mindfulness and performance.

A champion of racial reconciliation and healing, Menzise has also been on the frontlines of social justice work. As the former Assistant Director of the internationally renowned Race Relations Institute at Fisk University, Dr. Menzise played an integral part in the convening of multiple, large-scale, international dialogues about race, racism, and reconciliation. He assists with the development of culturally competent practitioners in both education and mental health; while also serving as an advisor and dissertation specialist for budding professionals. He has developed and implemented DEI work for small and large organizations, and is highly sought after for his unapologetic insight, guidance and direction. Menzise is currently an Associate Professor with the Morgan State University Institute for Urban Research, and is the immediate past president of The Association of Black Psychologists, Washington, DC Chapter.
