Swahili has changed the world, and may be the bridge for redemption. Because Swahili is the language chosen for Pan-Africanism, by those with the resources to “reach back” to Pan-Africanism in the imperialist country known as the U.S. of A., it will bring Living Beings Back To the Roots which Sprung Them Forth. I was propelled to Tanzania, to Learn Kiswahili in 2009 for this reason.

Nafanya kazi (I work) to instill in students the very essence as to why the lessons are both exciting and practical for students and their families to use, retain and apply in navigating life. Nafundisha (I teach) how subjects brought up in Kiswahili are incredibly transferrable and reflect upon every aspect of life. Kiswahili (the philosophy which comes with the language) can be incorporated conventionally in every aspect of educational subjects translatable. I am a great teacher (Mimi ni Mwalimu mzuri) because (kwa sababu) I work to ensure that each student realizes the power within them, the innate ability to understand and learn and problem solve through learning, and with use of, Kiswahili.

Course Objectives:

  • Kiswahili language and cultural preparedness in speech, conversation, writing and mannerisms.

  • Ability to Greet elders, professional peers and personal peers, and intergenerational courtesies.

  • Ability to substantially introduce self, friends, and family (name, age, background, etc.).

  • Sentence Structure of Kiswahili, ability to construct and hold conversations (noun, verb, adjective placement).

  • Keepsake of online (printable) resources to refer to Kiswahili instruction in the future, and Independence in continued self-instruction.

  • Confidence in conversation and comprehension of Kiswahili (Tanzanian standards), a willingness to speak with classmates in Kiswahili, and to share with family, friends and the world.

Attendance Policy:


Participation: This is a world/bridge/bantu language course, the only way to truly learn is to be present in class and ready to learn. You are expected to participate in discussion, respond to questions in class, and to RE-WRITE/RECORD ALL ITEMS TYPED OUT IN THE PROCESS OF THIS COURSE. Consider Any Language Shared to be an addendum to you textbook, all will resurface with testing. The more actively you are involved during the sessions, the more you will learn!


Honesty: Academic Honesty is expected and academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.


(Basically – Do your own work. “Keep it One-Hunnerd,” as my Spelman professor would say.)


Late Policy: Be present.
