EYES OF THE RAINBOW
Film Screening & Community Discussion — Honoring Nana Assata Shakur (1947–2025)
About the film:
Eyes of the Rainbow (1997), directed by Gloria Rolando, is an intimate portrait of Nana Assata Shakur in exile—her voice, her memory, and her unbroken commitment to Abibitumi ‘Black Power’. Woven with the spirit of Ọya and featuring performance and dance that echo across the Diaspora, the documentary brings us into Assata’s reflections on state repression, escape, healing, and the everyday work of living free in Cuba.
Why now:
On September 25, 2025, Nana Assata joined the honored ancestors in Havana at age 78. Her transition invites us to gather—not in mourning alone, but in study and action—around the life and teachings of a woman who shaped generations of struggle and imagination.
Our connection:
Abibitumi’s earliest online community took root in the mid-2000s in the orbit of the AssataShakur.org forums. That lineage matters: this space was built by people who learned, organized, and sharpened our analysis in conversations sparked by Nana Assata’s words. Today we carry that flame forward—centering Abibifahodie ‘Black Liberation’, language, and culture for Kmtyw ‘Black People’ worldwide.
Join us:
After the screening, we’ll host a facilitated discussion on Nana Assata’s legacy—political education, internationalism, culture, language, and praxis—toward concrete steps we can take now. Bring your questions, your memories, and your commitments.
