Former Brazilian slaves formed the Tabom People

The Tabom People, also known as the Tabons of Ghana, an Afro-Brazilian community of returned former slaves. When they arrived in the south of Ghana and Accra, knowing only the Portuguese language, they had the custom of greeting each other with “How are you?” To which the answer was “Okay”. For this reason, the natives began to call them the “tabon” people. They took from Brazil various skills such as irrigation techniques, architecture, carpentry, blacksmithing, goldsmithing and tailoring, which guaranteed the Afro-Brazilian community in Ghana a prominent place. The De Souza, Wellington, Benson, Josiah, Pereria, Palmares, Nelson, an Azumah, Amorin, Da Costa, Santos, De Medeiros, Nunoo, Olympio, Maslieno, Maselino families are among the country’s elite to this day.
