Question for the Twi Speakers in Ghana
I was discussing with a friend who corrected me that instead of meda wo ase paa, it is spelled pa ara, and paa is just how it’s pronounced. Online I also see people say meda ase pi. For saying thank you very much in Ghana, what is used more? 1. meda ase pa ara or 2. meda ase pi . Or is that just a preference thing and mean the same thing?

He’s correct and I’m impressed. Most people here don’t study the orthography and they just write things like however they sound to them, sometimes with a hilarious effect. I touch on a lot of them in this presentation that I gave at the UG Linguistics Department’s weekly seminar a couple of years Black: https://www.abibitumi.com/product/writing-in-akan-misspellings-typos-deviations-or-innovations/ It should be meda wo ase pa ara in both Asante Twi and Akuapem Twi, though Akuapem would be the only one of the two that would actually vocalize the /r/. The other option would be pii, not pi which translates to ‘thick’. There was an ɔkɔmfoɔ years ago who spoke out against the meda wo ase pii and said pa ara is the only correct form, but people also use pii in everyday speech events. I would say pa ara is more widespread, but both are used.
