“Eating with the hands” is a very ancient tradition used throughout Afrika even by the richest populations. A tradition that Afrikans are proud of, by eating with the hands it is said that this gives more information to the brain to prepare digestion. The fingers serve as indicators to asses whether the dish is hot, warm or cold and whether the food is rigid or flexible.
When touching food, the brain releases certain enzymes that adapt the metabolism. Thus, the body prepares the digestive organs to facilitate the assimilation of each bite. This also reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by action to eat more slowly. By using hands this encourages mindfulness, this allows time to focus on the food and to feel more connected, to engage all the senses, to feel the texture of the food, its aroma, to enjoy it which as a result one receives a lot more pleasure and satisfaction.
And even though there are some foods that cannot be eaten by hand therefore cutlery is used, it is said that one is encouraged to eat with hands purely because most cutlery / utensils sold in the trade are made of aluminium, stainless steel, plastics which are harmful materials for our health in the long run and that it also can change the structure of food and are often mixed with chemicals during their manufacture.
