I just finished reading Mestre Nenel’s book about Mestre Bimba and Capoiera Regional–Bimba: Um século da Capoeira Regional. It was a very, very enlightening book and confirms my sense that Bimba’s work is still misunderstood and mis-represented by some. Further, the author challenges the notion of “tradition” in Capoeira in a number of important ways. This dovetails with points raised in another book that I recently read called Staging Brazil: Choreographies of Capoeira by Ana Paula Höfling. She provides an exhaustive account of the “evolving” nature of Capoeira, and in so doing also complicates notions of what is regarded as “traditional” in Capoeira.
