Baba Dayo Laoye offered a very beautiful discussion about Fela Kuti. He talked about how Fela’s music manifest the attributes of several Orisha including Ogun (his warrior spirit), Shango (his love of his wives), Osun (the beauty and creativity of his craft), and Oya (his ferocity). That Fela was an exponent of the reclamation of African spiritual traditions is particularly notable in this light.
He also inspired me to learn more about Fela’s mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a key figure in the independence struggle.
