“There is no landlord in the Mbôngi system of economy, but only the ‘Kânda’—the whole community. The land, source of life and happiness, belongs to the community. The chief of the land is only the manager of community affairs and properties, not a ‘land lord.’ The rights to use of the community land belong to all, no matter what their individual status. No individual, even the chief, has the right to sell an inch of community land. Yet the Kânda economic system does not experience catastrophic crises because its economy symbolizes life motion itself—which is a key concept in the Bântu world view and belief.”
