Words From Yesterday on Instagram: "Today we have something really special for y'all 🙌🏿⁣ ⁣ We are demonstrating a traditional Akan game that we play in order to keep our intellect sharp and keep proverbs committed to memory. ⁣ ⁣ We refer to it as Ɛbɛ Akansie or "proverb battle". It involves two opponents going back and forth and reciting proverbs. These proverbs don't have to relate to each other but it demonstrates a certain cleverness to be able to respond to your opponent with a proverb that mirrors or contradicts his/her proverb. ⁣ ⁣ Before we begin the proverb battle we start with a recitation or back and forth that comes from a particular story. ⁣ ⁣ The story goes that a wise man who was said to know thousands of proverbs was summoned by the king to put on a performance. When the king's messenger came to his house the conversation went as such:⁣ ⁣ Wise man:⁣ Kata w'ani te⁣ (Close your eyes and open them)⁣ ⁣ Messenger:⁣ Makata ate⁣ (I have closed my eyes and opened them)⁣ ⁣ Wise man:⁣ Wokataeɛ wohuu deɛn?⁣ (When you closed your eyes what did you see?)⁣ ⁣ Messenger: ⁣ Manhu hwee⁣ (I saw nothing)⁣ ⁣ Wiseman:⁣ Yɛnnyae a, yɛnso daeɛ ⁣ (BIf we do not sleep we do not dream)⁣ ⁣ We begin the proverb battle by reciting this conversation because it speaks to the fact that proverbs are situational and also viewed as sacred. The purpose of proverbs are to be applied in solving or navigating a situation and not to be said loosely. This recitation creates that situation/space necessary to birth proverbs. ⁣ ⁣ We plan to showcase our battles every few weeks so stay tuned 🙌🏿⁣ ⁣ #wordsfromyesterday #akanproverbs #yorubaproverbs #africanwisdom #africanproverbs #igboproverbs #caribbeanproverbs #kreyolproverbs⁣"
