My Classical African Literature class just concluded with an epic proverb battle. While I have been teaching African thought for over a decade using proverbs, this was the first time that I held a battle. It went well. The students demonstrated a good degree of mastery.
My daughter had the last word with this proverb, Bala nga tontu, jĂ«kkala dĂ©gg “Before you reply, understand first”). Some people speak in the absence of understanding, but wisdom requires that we listen, comprehend, and respond to situations in a thoughtful and appropriate manner.
