Mali Reclaims its Gold: $33 Million in Gold Shared With Citizens

Mali Channels $33 Million in Gold Revenues to Local Communities

Mali has just made a bold move—distributing $33 million from gold mining revenues directly to its people.

But this isn’t just about money… it’s about who controls Africa’s natural resources.

Mali’s government, led by President Assimi Goïta, has set aside $33 million (18.8 billion CFA francs) from gold mining revenues for local communities through the Local Mining Development Fund. Announced at a ceremony in Bamako, the money is expected to go into basic but critical needs across mining areas—healthcare, schools, water systems, and energy infrastructure.

The move comes as gold revenues continue to surge, hitting 835.1 billion CFA francs in 2024 after new mining reforms increased the state’s stake and scrapped tax breaks for mining companies. Authorities say this is about making sure resource wealth actually reaches ordinary people, not just staying at the top.

🗣️ Mali’s President, General Assimi Goïta, and the Mali government, on March 12, 2026, allocated $33 million dollars (equivalent to 18.8 billion CFA francs) in gold mining revenues through the Local Mining Development Fund in an effort to boost development in communities across the country’s mining zones.

🗣️ The presentation of the funds was officially held during a ceremony at the Koulouba Palace in Bamako, the official residence of the country’s leadership. The event was presided over by President General Assimi Goïta, alongside other Mali’s senior officials, including Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maïga, and representatives of the National Transitional Council (NTC).

🗣️ According to the Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maïga, the Local Development Fund was created to channel a share of the income from Mali’s gold mining revenues to the local communities. The funds are intended to finance projects such as healthcare services and facilities, educational centers, water supply systems, and energy infrastructure.

🗣️ The fund is financed primarily through mining royalties and revenues paid to the Malian state, as well as mandatory contributions calculated from the turnover of mining companies operating in the country. As such, the disbursement framework is designed to benefit all municipalities nationwide.

🗣️ In 2024, gold mining revenues increased significantly, rising from 546.7 billion CFA francs to 835.1 CFA francs ($1.4 billion). This increase is largely attributed to the new mining codes introduced by President General Assimi Goïta government in 2023, which allowed the state to increase its revenue stakes in gold concessions and remove tax exemptions from multinational mining companies during the exploitation phase.

🗣️ The revenue allocation policy forms parts of President General Assimi Goïta and his government’s broader effort to ensure that income generated from Mali’s natural resources directly benefits the state and the people of Mali.

🗣️ For decades, Kmtyw (Afrikan) countries rich in natural resources have struggled to ensure their people benefit. Mali and the Alliance of Sahel States is now trying to change that.

Politician Not Sharing the proceeds of gold and natural resources and wealth to its citizens.
What happened in Mali is historic in Africa. President Assimi Goïta promised that his government will follow up with the local community leaders to ensure these funds are utilized effectively.
Under the previous democratically elected political regime, what Mali politicians was getting from the mining sector was the automatic 10% (and most of the time less than 10%) in their colonial agreement that does not require government input or oversight in the mining sector.
The moment Goita came to power he increased the share that comes to Mali to 35% and directed the review of the mining code.
This fund distribution will create economic activities in the various communities and further improve the GDP of Mali and the lives of the Malian people.
Well done to President General Assimi Goïta and the government of Mali 🎉🎉🎉
