N lo bóyálo luë amma. Ká lüe le? I’m working on a translation but can’t seem to find the word for “giraffe” in ëtyö. I’m wondering whether or not giraffes are indigenous to Etúla a Eri since I can’t find the word. Potóo. O sá úwe.

Generally, not finding a word in a first search, does not necessarily mean that the word does not exist.

Ëë. That’s very true but I asked several native speakers and looked in a Bubi dictionary and haven’t been able to find what the word is.

That may leave a couple of options:, which include 1) adopting a word for it from sister languages that have it or 2) coin a word for it based on how the Ëtyö speakers conceptualize the animal (like Twi kɔnhunu ‘lit. empty neck, worthless neck or neck only’) 3) use coirrowing to develop a word based on the etymological breakdown of the word giraffe From Arabic زَرَافَة (zarāfa), from Classical Syriac ܙܵܪܝܼܦܵܐ (zarāfa), ultimately from Persian زُرنَاپَا (zurnāpā), a compound of زُرنَا (zurnā, “flute, zurna”) and پَا (pā, “leg”).
