The internet is strange. The more Im on it the more I see I have to stay off of it. But anyway a couple of weeks ago I got familiar with something I had never heard before. It was a sister in Africa calling herself Hispanic African. Oh and get this, she’s different than Hispanics in South America. I mean I was aware that people spoke different languages in Africa. I literally thought everyone was aware of this I mean we have a word for it is called colonization. however, I was not aware that people considered her identity tied to the language. I am keenly aware of this fascination with identities Europeans created when they divided Africa, and African’s obsession with trying to tell you Africa is not a country but a continent. I wonder when Marcus Garvey was doing his work did someone tell him Africa was not a country but a continent. This European education is really educating us. I really thought this identity confusion was an American phenomenon maybe I’m slow. Then I realize this really shouldn’t have been a surprise. But is this any different than calling ourselves African-American?
