When I first started waking up to the truth about racism, it was jarring. At the time, I thought I had a good understanding of what racism was. I thought my formal education and life experience had taught me everything I needed to know about it but I really had no idea…. When I started seeing this thing we call racism for what it is, I was instantly transformed. I thank God for the outlet of poetry to process and share the unthinkable truths I had now become aware of. I also immediately started organizing, which helped- knowing that I was at least attempting to do something about oppression on a regular basis…. I can’t lie it’s been a difficult journey but I’ve learned and grown so much over time. Much of what I’ve experienced is in my poems.

This recent collection of poems (“The Awakening Anthology”) is a poetic storytelling of the experiences, feelings, and lessons I’ve had on my journey through racial consciousness. It’s the echoes of those who came before me on this journey and the unfiltered words from my soul.

I hope these poems help you as they have helped me ❤️
