In Twi, “Mmarima” is plural for “Barima” which means man.
The word for “person” in Twi is “onipa” which means, “One who is good.” When someone does something charitable we would say, “Ɔyɛ nipa.” To be a person is to do good so yes your assessment is correct. It’s a refreshing way to look at one another.
