Colleges and universities continue to have an ever-changing population. As the American population continues to diversify, the universities are forced to change and support the students they serve. This is seemingly a positive thing when we look at schools with problematic history, like you ivy leagues or other elite institution; however, these institutions often do the bare minimum to support black students.
These institutions, built on racism, by black slaves for the education of white men, use the money they have profited to provide scholarships to these students for being first generation or low-income. These circumstances were created by American white supremacist ideas, allow students to enroll in these institutions but subjecting them to racism from white and non-black faculty, staff, and students.
They are reaching these students through intentional outreach programs, but only for the benefit of the institution and their white students. What is also unfortunate is when Historically Black Colleges/ Universities lose sight of their mission, and become so diverse that the university no longer makes supporting black students a priority.
This is an example of how these institutions maintain the status quo of white supremacist ideals. The fact that the functioning of these universities is deeply-rooted in whiteness, it is just as worrisome and problematic when this happens at an HBCU.
