      In recent years, more districts are increasing recruitment from HBCUS and surrounding colleges for new teaching jobs. This efforts should increase the number of teachers of color represented in the field. Research shows that techers of color benefit all students not just students of color. Teachers of color can reach black students without barriers like cultural bias. Urban districts often provide wrap around services in schools where the majority of students are of color to suport a holistic approach to education. These schools are found to provide mentoring services, tutoring, job placement, and counseling services from a pyschologist. Schools maintain the status quo by offering the same excuses surrounding lack of student achievement. Uban public schools continue to be underfunded, overpopulated and experience high teacher turnover. School districts need to create programs and incentives to increase teacher retention, especially in urban schools.
