As the waves of asylum seekers and migrants pour into America and Europe, I am aware that the system will assimilate them and utilize them as political chips. However, in the crisis, there is an opportunity for the Afrocentric movement to generate some power that will benefit our long term sustainability.

Many of the states are abusing our people in their detention centers at an alarming rate. The migrants have little to no recourse when their human rights are abused. They are kept in the detention centers for years and denied access to lawyers, speaking to their families and even voicing their complaints to the public. There have been hunger strikes, however, the privatized detention centers are slow to respond to their demands. Covid cases are on the rise in those confined spaces.
1. We can muster a campaign to show Afrikans what they can expect when they travel to the belly of the beast.
2. As the migrants become documented and are looking to be integrated, we can be there to provide jobs (start businesses that provide culturally relevant products and services), education (language classes, historical and epistemological alignment) and counseling services that will retain and amplify the competency of our culture to provide for us. This is crucial because white women have been the leaders of the response and this is seeding the savior image in the minds of the migrants.
3. Possibly be there for the deportation/repatriation of some.
This all depends on our ability to coalesce a coalition of those on the continent and abroad. The vision is grand but, we are starting with small steps.
We are hosting a welcome event, clothes drives and meals for the Congolese and Angolan migrants that have arrived in WA State. Our goal is to be at the front of the line for integrating the migrants and be the advocates for their needs.
