RECORDING: Intensive Workshop: Yorùbá Language Round Table: Òrìṣà Stories
How Ìjàpá the tortoise came to be the sacrifice for Ọ̀sanyìn

Why:

This workshop took place on June 17, 2012 and covered four pages with illustrations from Adébóyè Babalọlá’s famous transcription of Yorùbá stories and folktales entitled Akójọpọ̀ Àlọ́ Ìjàpá. The story Ìjàpá àti Ìyá Ẹlẹ́pà is a funny, entertaining and deep ontological tale of how things came to be the way they are and how Ìjàpá came to be the sacrifice for Ọ̀sanyìn. The story is read in Yorùbá giving a line by line translation into english with individual words broken down and explained etymologically. Then, the entire story is read through in its entirety in Yorùbá without interruption.

The goal of this particular workshop was to complement our classes with instructor-moderated open dialogue on a specific topic. These stories are a view into the moonlight folktale sessions that go on in rural Yorubaland to this day and which help to inculcate the young and old alike with the history, the worldview and the spiritual understanding so valuable for them and their community.
