Group Description

Okunini Kamau Rashid is an Associate Professor of Educational Foundations and Inquiry at National Louis University in Chicago. He earned his doctoral degree in the Sociology of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009. Prior to this, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Inner-City Studies from Northeastern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His research focuses on African American history and culture, particularly on the inter-generational dynamics of African American social critique. This has included an exploration of the theorizing of W.E.B. Du Bois and contemporary African-centered scholars.

Lastly, he is active in a number of community organizations in the Chicago-area including the Kemetic Institute of Chicago, a research and educational organization focused on the ancient Nile Valley civilizations. He also the president of the Midwest Region of the Association for the study of Classical African Civilizations. Further, he is a co-founder of Akoben Rites-of-Passage Society, a rites-of-passage program for African male youths ages 11-18, an urban farmer, and a Capoeira instructor under the auspices of Os Malandros de Mestre Touro.
