Abibisika (Black Gold) Points Yeah. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and play djembe. I know how it is. I have thought about this for my own performances. I’m actually writing some rules for my performances so that they don’t steal our culture. One of my priorities is to focus on playing for Black/Afrikan audiences, either all-Black or mostly-Black, and Pan-African organizations. Non-Blacks don’t have a right to our culture. Sadly, the Bay Area has gone through such intense gentrification that a lot of areas that used to be mostly-Black are less Black now (Black spaces still exist, though, and, like I said, my priority is playing for them). So if I’m around non-Black people in the audience, I’m making my boundaries of cultural respect clear to them. I think Black people and Black artists should be more militant in protecting what is rightfully ours.
