Young macheteros and dancers from the Afrikan communities of Northern Cauca, an Andean region, not coastal, in Africolombia. Afrikans in the Andes are seldom talked about. These communities have many generations developing their skills with the machete as they grow sugarcane and that was the forced enslaved labor there. The skill set also became a defensive and offensive fighting art.
Villarica, Cauca, Colombia, is a Black Andean community about 1.5 hrs away from the large city of Cali that I’ve personally been to. It was beautiful being in an entirely Black town with Afrikans who keep their gene pool intact! It’s said that this Black Andean region was a series of maroon communities. It’s also the region in the country with the most surnames denoting Afrikan origin such as Mina, Carabali, Viafara, Angola, etc.
