These are my people: Balanta/B’rassa!
-
This is THE overview of the most prominent ethnic group in Guinea-Bissau, the Balanta. Their name means “Those who resist”. They migrated to West Africa from the Nile Valley some time ago….these are all attributes of my paternal ancestry that is the BALANTA.

We stopped by a Balanta village on the way from Senegal to The Gambia years ago.

It was interesting. There was an Afrikan out of Martinique, I think it was, whose last name was Balant, who traced his lineage there. They took one look at his forehead and proclaimed him to be family. It was a good experience.

I love how continental Afrikans can tell their own from physcial features
. I’ve also noticed a group of people in the diaspora (namely Columbia) who hold that “Balanta” last name. Some believe they are descendants, and I wouldn’t be surprised. I didn’t know that name was present in Martinique too..really interesting.
