Question for Abibitumi family: Our mtoto is turning one next month and our family would like to ceremonialize this milestone in the presence of our community in an Afrikan way. Does anyone know of any indigenous Afrikan traditions (naming ceremonies, dedications, kwk) or books/sources that we can consult to prepare for this occasion? Asante sana in advance for any feedback. Abibifahodie.

Afrocentricity International does the following:
The morning of the ceremony, the Shenuti (administrative and spiritual leader of a division) does a ritual introducing the child to the ancestors
The ceremony itself, the shenuti does a ritual libation and community chants an oath of protection n support for the child.
We did extra stuff after the last ritual. We did a ice breaker convo for families to get to know each other (because it was their first time meeting)

I am rereading Self Healing Power and Therapy, Old Teachings from Africa by Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau and there is a section on naming that may be of interest to you.
Willing this helps you in the process.
