Talked to my parents today about the singles night last night. I mentioned that a brotha messaged me today and said “you were the life of the party” My mother said “you just have that personality but single brothas may be reluctant to talk to the life of the party.” I replied that normally I’d shrink back for that very reason but decided to have fun so I was just myself. My father called back hours later and told me how much I remind him of his mother/my grandmother who died when I was 8 but apparently had the same personality I have. My dad said, “I know you shrink from showing how smart you are and how amazing you are waiting for other people to catch up but I never want yourself down and reduce yourself for other people. Be you all the time and if you meet people who can’t keep up with your excellence, you’re with the wrong people. I need you to always be amazing.” My brother had similar advice to avoid shrinking so “you don’t end up with someone who can’t handle amazing”. Lately, I’ve been purging energy vampires without thinking of it in this context but WOW the biggest take away from that is no matter how old you are, you always need amazing parents and amazing family. Eternally thankful for both my parents and my family.
