Here is a page from “Healing Insanity: A Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria”. It breaks down some of the terms within Igbo societies used to label the socio-political kinship units.

Obviously this is not exhaustive. The things that can be written about the various Igbo kinship systems and terms is endless. I imagine it’s this way with most African “cultures” or “family systems” because they are so intertwined in terms of what we might translate as cosmology, law/religion, science, politics, etc. This is what makes the typical African system/culture a strong one in many aspects…but also fragile one in the sense that if one area of life is tampered with, if one area of life has a foreign pathogen or alien element introduced, it can break down the whole entire cultural system. Because everything is connected and overlapping just like a spider web.
