Today is a sacred Akan holy day for council, honoring anthropomorphic spirits, and medico-religious healing, called Fɔdwo. On this day, we are called to connect with the nature spirits that emanate from the rivers, wind, forests, and mountains—forces that help maintain order, balance, and harmony in the world.

Fɔdwo is a time for peacemaking, council meetings, family nurturing, charity, and community organizing. It is a day to align spiritual practices with the everyday work of building community.

Okomfohema Nana Akua Oparebea embodied this principle. She showed us how to channel the power of the nature spirits into the work of confronting social, economic, and political challenges. By establishing Akan shrines in the U.S., she gave the Diaspora sacred spaces where ritual and spirit guide collective healing and resistance.

On September 27 at 5 PM EST, join Garveyite Productions for a free virtual viewing of rare Smithsonian footage documenting her 1973 visit to Washington, DC. Witness how she planted shrines as beacons of resilience, unity, and liberation.
