Yɛma wo awoda paa, Nana Dinizulu!
Today, we celebrate the earthday of Nana Yao Opare Dinizulu I, the master drummer, priest, and institution-builder who helped plant Akan culture and Akom priesthood in the hearts of African people in the Americas. From early cultural work in Harlem to founding Bosum-Dzemawodzi, establishing the first Akan shrines and Akom services in the U.S., and touring the world with Dinizulu and His African Dancers, Drummers and Singers, Nana Dinizulu showed what it means to live as an African in America without ever severing our roots.
To honor his legacy today, plug into the communities and institutions he birthed and inspired:
• Explore the Dinizulu Cultural Arts Institute and pick up his book Akan Priests in America or recordings of his powerful music.
• Support Onipa Abusia, carrying his vision forward and hosting the Nana Esi Ketewaa Festival this Kwesiada, 11/22/2025.
• Donate to A.S.U.O. / African Spiritual United Order and the ongoing work to maintain the sacred Asuo Gyebi home shrine in Larteh, Ghana.
Nana Dinizulu built bridges between Ghana and the diaspora, the drum and the altar, and our history and our future. May we walk those bridges with commitment, study his works, support his institutions, and keep his rhythm moving through our communities.
Abusua Baako na Mogya Baako!

Are you connected to a shrine in the snakes. I live close to Philly.

@AgyaKwadwo Aane, Agya. I’m a member of the Nana Asuo Gyebi shrine here in DC. Apparently, we have a sister shrine in Philly. Are you familiar with the Asona Aberade shrine?

@AgyaKwadwo Are you connected to any other shrines in that area? I’ve been reading about the Asona Aberade shrine in Philly, but I have yet to come across any of the actual shrine community members from out there. I trust Ra and the Nananom will lead our inquiries in the right direction.
