All-Girl Science Team Awarded $4K For Their NASA Project

This all-girl science team won $4,000 for a NASA project — even after racist trolls tried to sabotage their chances. High school juniors Bria Snell, India Skinner, and Mikayla Sharrieff designed a lead filter for drinking water, and were the only all-black girl team in the finals. After submitting their filter to the NASA Youth Competition, the space cooperation left it up to social media to choose the winning team, which would win a trip to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and a $4,000 stipend. However, 4Chan trolls hacked the voting system to prevent the girls from winning and used racist language in public posts about the attack. NASA suspended the voting and said they’d only count votes before the attack. But D.C Mayor Muriel Bowser isn’t waiting for the tally and is awarding the girls $4,000 to continue their work for clean water. “Mikayla, India, and Bria are just the type of people and scientists out world needs more of and we are proud to support their dreams,” Bowser stated. The girls hope to put their filter on water fountains in D.C. schools that have poor water quality. Their work exemplifies that you are never too young to make a difference.
