According to Professor Charles Finch speaking of the combined gold output of Songhai and previous empires, the Gold Miners were industrious beyond belief: “It is estimated that the total amount of gold mined in West Afrika up to the year 1500 was 3.500 tons, worth more than $30 billion in todays market” (i.e in 1998).
