      Maasai Ivory Trumpet
19th Century AD to 20th Century AD (Kenya)
This type of trumpet was used when a Maasai Chief was to make his entrance, the horns would blow and is described as “filling the air with a melody rich of pageantry”. At ceremonies and weddings they heralded the bride and groom letting the whole village know a couple is beginning a new life together.

These horns though structurally simple is in fact very difficult to perform and needs not only much training but powerful lungs. An instrument like this has great volume and can be heard from far away, which is why they were used by messengers to especially announce any danger. To hold these kind of horns is said to recall the many fanfares, celebrations, announcements which marked significant moments in their history.
