Prehistoric rock paintings are found in every area of the continent. Huge areas of South Afrika, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and Algeria contain these markings of our ancestors and which have been assigned back to at least 15,000 B.C.E; the finds at Tassili Plateau dates back to at least 30,000 years. From the early period down through the ages is said to reveal the embodiment of three significant elements: craftedness, originality and spirituality.
What this shows is that these pictures tell us of our ancestors who were the first humans to be able to manage their own affairs, believed in communication and had a good idea about how to record their thoughts, ideas as well as activities. Having the ability to communicate and think meant that our ancestors could conceive of the future, observe maturation, process of children, learn form the pregnancy of women and the time it took for an infant to be born and to expect certain rewards based upon current actions.
It is estimated that there are over 100,000 of such paintings in caves and under mountains. Afrikan expressive art can be identified because their character is distinctive from that of other cultures artistic modalities. All the investigators of pre-historic Afrikan art have expressed their amazement at its variety and distinctiveness.
