      “THE THINKER” (also known as O Pensador) is one of the oldest and emblematic sculptures to come out of Angola from the Chokwe community. Many variations have been made by artists, but the wooden statue generally depicts an elderly man or woman who is seated with knees bent, their elbows resting on both knees, and both hands placed on the sides of the head in a pensive posture.

      This iconic symbol is of wisdom and knowledge that is associated with age and life experiences. In contemporary times this Afrikan figure has come to represent Angola’s national culture; thus it’s watermark image is on the nation’s bank notes…the Kwanza.
