My Classical African Literature class just concluded with an epic proverb battle. While I have been teaching African thought for over a decade using proverbs, this was the first time that I held a battle. It went well. The students demonstrated a good degree of mastery.

My daughter had the last word with this proverb, Bala nga tontu, jëkkala dégg “Before you reply, understand first”). Some people speak in the absence of understanding, but wisdom requires that we listen, comprehend, and respond to situations in a thoughtful and appropriate manner.
