Zimbabwe Set to Launch National AI Strategy in October

The announcement came from Dr. Tatenda Mavetera, Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, during the opening of the Artificial Intelligence for Africa Summit.

The government is already laying the groundwork by:

strengthen AI infrastructure;
expand digital skills training;
improve data systems.

“These efforts align with Zimbabwe’s vision of becoming an upper-middle-income society by 2030, leveraging AI to empower farmers, healthcare workers, and educators,” Mavetera added.

Addressing fears of automation, the minister urged a new perspective: “AI should not mean job losses; it should mean job transformation.”

Culturally, she stressed that AI must reflect Africa’s diversity, including indigenous languages. “An AI built on foreign data will not understand the richness of our communities or the complexities of our societal fabric.”
