Ghana FDA Unveils Digital Platform to Streamline Services

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has launched the Ghana FDA Integrated Regulatory Management System (GFIRM), a digital platform that allows applicants to submit and track applications online.

FDA CEO Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni said the move, effective August 1, addresses delays in communication and approvals.

“You can now sit at home and do all your applications. At the click of a button, we will receive them,” he explained at a stakeholder engagement in Accra.

The initiative supports the government’s proposed 24-hour economy and is backed by partners funding key projects, including a state-of-the-art “clean room,” a molecular biology lab in Tema, and a new PharmaVax data center.

Prof. Opuni noted that Ghana’s WHO-prequalified and ISO-accredited labs have positioned the FDA as a trusted regional hub, while market surveillance has shown reduced palm oil adulteration and better medicine quality.

“Ultimately, we hope to get to a point where there will not be any substandard or classified medicine found on our market,” he said.
