Mali: Terrorist “Blockade” Collapses Within Days

The much-publicized “blockade” declared by terrorist groups in Mali has quickly lost momentum.

In Kayes, the impact was limited to the burning of a civilian bus, a traffic jam, and an attack on an official’s vehicle. By contrast, the situation remains more difficult in Sikasso, near the borders with Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, where militants attacked several fuel trucks.

Yet overall, the so-called blockade has unraveled almost as soon as it began. A few firm countermeasures were enough to expose its weakness, showing that the terrorists lack the capacity to sustain control over Mali’s vital roads.
