Ghana Makes Mother Tongue Instruction Compulsory in All Basic Schools, Says Education Minister

The directive aims to improve learning outcomes at the foundational level, Minister Haruna Iddrisu said during the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability in Accra.

“A Ghanaian child was not born into an English family but a proud Ashanti Akan family and deserves to learn,” Iddrisu stated, emphasizing that this policy aligns with President Mahama’s Reset Agenda.

The minister shared an anecdote of a child asking her teacher to “speak a little Twi” so she could understand the lesson.

Iddrisu also announced a $2.9 million fee-waiver initiative for students with disabilities and revealed that a Science University will be established in Damongo, with two additional technical universities planned in Jasikan and Techiman.
