The incumbent President of Zanzibar won the regional elections
The incumbent president of the semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago, a member of the ruling party “Chama Cha Mapinduzi” (CCM, in Swahili — “Party of the Revolution”), Hussein Ali Mwinyi won the regional leadership elections. Almost 75% of the archipelago’s residents voted for him.
Two Tanzanian citizens were killed during unrest at the border with Kenya
The Kenyan publication Daily Nation, citing local officials, reports that two men aged 27 and 28 were shot by Tanzanian police officers. It is noted that protesters illegally crossed the Tanzanian border and began demonstrations, which later escalated into unrest. The demonstrators set fire to a checkpoint, tore down several banners with images of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and threw stones at Tanzanian police officers while shouting anti-government slogans.
Ministry of Internal Affairs representative Raymond Omollo emphasized that Kenya respects Tanzania’s sovereignty and expressed confidence that the authorities will be able to properly resolve the internal unrest.
