Nigeria Launches First-Ever National Cloves Farming Program, Says Farmers’s Association

The program involves over 74,000 farmers nationwide, aiming to make the country Africa’s second commercial clove producer after Tanzania, the Cloves Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria announced.

      Key Program Details:

Scale: A minimum of 2,000 farmers in each of Nigeria’s 36 states will participate in the pilot, each receiving quality seeds and inputs to cultivate half a hectare.

Goal: To tap into high domestic and international demand from food and pharmaceutical industries, shifting Nigeria from a net importer to a potential exporter.

Expected Impact: Described as a potential “game-changer” for foreign exchange earnings and youth employment, while also cushioning farmers against price crashes of other crops.

Support: The program has secured improved seeds from Tanzania and a comprehensive cultivation training manual developed by Nigeria’s Ahmadu Bello University.
