I was impressed to recently discover that the maroon people of Suriname or Dutch Guyana as it’s sometimes referred speak the Kromanti language. To a lesser extent they also speak it in the maroon villages in Jamaica. The Ghanaian man that participated in the documentary who went to Suriname became so emotional when he met a maroon Surinamese who could speak to him in Kromanti. Is Kromanti same as Twi? Are there any studies out there that deal with the preservation of West African languages in the diaspora?
