Malian artist, Fatoumata Diawara, is currently topping my “artists I listen to every 5 minutes” list.
This is just a short trailer for her song ‘Nterini’ (My Friend) from the album ‘Fenfo’ (Something to Say). I just love the truth she talks about in this trailer.https://abibitumitv.com/watch/fatoumata-diawara-nterini-trailer_ZuCYsI9Yc8xo9ya.html

Thank you for the video. I also like her but I don’t know all her songs. There is a song that I really appreciate “Makoun Oumou”. Do you know what does it mean?

I’m trying to learn Bambara (the Malian language she is singing in) from music so bear with me, but I believe it translates close to “Don’t cry Oumou”. It is a song dedicated to another Malian singer named, ‘Oumou Sangaré’, whom Fatoumata strongly respects — Oumou was one of (or THE) first professional female singer in Mali. The song is just talking about the hatred/lies Oumou faced.

This is interesting in that ma the negative imperative (translating as ‘don’t”) is má in Yorùbá, mmá in Twi and m in mdw nTr: https://books.google.com.gh/books?id=AxXE65flKPwC&pg=PA272&lpg=PA272&dq=bambara+ma+negative+imperative&source=bl&ots=Paa-UYvZOG&sig=ACfU3U1iVQTqZSl3bXc1vbvwaEeKTijN6w&hl=ak&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjwzIj6pvHrAhURUBUIHZqIC3oQ6AEwC3oECAYQAQ #v=onepage&q=bambara%20ma%20negative%20imperative&f=false

From Fenfo my favourites are 1.) Nterini 2.) Kokoro 3.) Fenfo 4.) Takamba 5.) Don Do
But I love so many songs by Fatou! A song from her first album called, ‘Bissa’ is one of my favs too!
Edit: And how could I forget, her song called — Timbuktu Fasso — is just intense and powerful.

Asante! Now I know more about the meaning of that song. It’s so better when you understand the meaning of a song.
