“Some time ago, in Beyond the Colour Line, I made the point that we have got to be wary about what I call “continentalism”. That is, the argument that Pan-Africanism means, still for us today, the unity of the African Continent in the first place, a unity of post-colonial states, and not as I would say and insist the unity of peoples, whose history and culture derive from the African Continent, and are conscious of this affinity and wish to develop these roots as a basis for the social and economic emancipation of African people. My definition fundamentally recognizes the link with the Diaspora as more important than the notion of Continental unity per se, which is essentially geographical. In other words, the unity of the greater part of this Continent, logically, would emerge more as a consequence than a cause. Again in other words, if people of African history and descent unite, that is if the African Nation unites, most of the Continent of Africa will unite.”
– Prof. Kwesi Kwaa Prah, Foreword to the book Pan Africanism/African Nationalism, Strengthening the Unity of Africa and its Diaspora, Edited by B.F. Bankie & K. Mchombu

Meanwhile if you speak to him he doesn’t mind unity with the diaspora as long as Diasporans stay in the diaspora. That’s just another strain of continentalism if you ask me.

Yeh I remember you sharing this. Having met & spoken to him a few times, he’s never relayed anything of the sort. Although, I hear his book on Garvey in leaves alot to be desired.
To what ever extent he believes this I would be interested to hear his reasoning. Eitherway… I guess our elders have their contradictions at times.

You can probably ask him directly. His comments were in an anti-continentalist meeting convened by Nna Chinweizu. I felt like we invited a dog to a cat’s rights meeting.

Lol… I hear you. I certainly will next time we interact. 🙏🏿
