“Pope Slams ‘Forgotten Genocide’ in Congo

After Pope Francis celebrated mass on Wednesday for about 1 million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he heard first-hand accounts of atrocities committed in the country – before urging those who suffered to forgive the perpetrators of the “inhuman violence” against them.

The Pope also called on those who “plunder, scourge and destabilise” the turbulent region to lay down their weapons.

“You are enriching yourselves through the illegal exploitation of this country’s goods and through the brutal sacrifice of innocent victims,” Pope Francis said in an address from the Vatican Embassy in Kinshasa.
