Pictured below are young mothers of the Himba carrying infants in their traditional baby carriers looking over the Kunene River. It is said by their tradition the mothers of the young pregnant women can calculate the time of their daughters birth, this is by counting moon cycles. On the last few days before the birth, the mother would point at the moon and say, “when the moon passes over our head in this angle, this is when my daughter would give birth”. Naturally it is said that the mother’s prediction proves to be very accurate.

The very reason in this image over looking the river is that whilst looking over they are wearing very distinctive baby boy and girl carriers. If a woman only has boys and wishes for a girl she will then borrow a baby girl carrier from another woman. According to their belief, the ancestors will hear her heart wish and deliver her a baby girl.
