Zande – Azande warriors with shields
the Azande were essentially a spear and shield people who also used the throwing-knife. The Azande did not use the bow and arrow, and such peoples who used them were subdued and assimilated by the Azande seem for the most part to have discarded them for the spear and shield. But though the spear continued throughout Zande history to be the main offensive weapon for the vast majority of men, some guns had been acquired before 1870, and in that year and later a fair quantity were obtained from the Arab trading companies by conquest, trade, or gift, and later from the Egyptian Government and the French and Belgians by the same means. —as written by By Ε.
