” The word “Cosmos” meaning “Order” or Ma’at” can also be found in the word “Cosmetology”. The word cosmetology literally means “to arrange or put in order” (to perform Ma’at) but it is used to refer to the science and art of beautification which includes hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures, pedicures, etc. Cosmetology applying Ma’at, as the science and art of beautification is an art that African women have been doing for thousands of years. The mathematical process of applying Ma’at, Order and Arrangement for beautification (called Cosmetology in modern language) involves creating symmetric Geometric patterns that are aesthetically pleasing, proportional and balanced.
The mathematical principles of applied Ma’at for beautification (Cosmetology) are most evident in the geometric patterns found in African hairstyles. It has been scientifically shown that geometric facial symmetry is a trait that humans find most attractive and desirable; therefore one of the goals of applying Ma’at in Cosmetology is to make the face appear symmetrical.
Ma’at in the form of Cosmetology leads to beautification, attraction and pro-creation, which further illustrates the association between Ma’at and Creation. In sounds and tones, the application of Ma’at manifests as musical harmony. In building and construction, the application of Ma’at is manifested as solidity and stability. The understanding and Application of the principle of Ma’at is essential in any type of creation.”
