Chapter 8 (bullet points) – Roots to Fruit by Queen Tease:
“Who knew this thing called home schooling would grow me so much?. That it would transform my life in such a way that would allow me to touch the world with my divine purpose and leave me feeling spiritually full, relentlessly driven, and so eternally grateful. I love this journey! My children are truly the best part of it all. They are the joy that keeps me bouncing, the divine energy that keeps me grounded and the reason I have to stay centered in my “Why”, because this stuff is hard work. Yet when it comes to greatness, I’m about that life. So, putting in that grind is not optional. My children are my motivation in full bloom. They keep me steadily growing, evolving, and sitting further in my divine purpose. They are my Wisdom Circle and my High Level University and I am committed to graduating with nothin but honors.”“In order to speak about home schooling “why” when it comes to home schooling, I have to examine the origins of my thoughts as far back as I can remember. After birthing five children and being gifted with two more through my previous union, the role of parenting has always been monumental for me. This is partly due to the soul of who I intrinsically am and also as a result of the gifts from the Creator, my Ancestors, and the support of family and community. Yet some of my most subconsciously etched convictions, I have to humbly attribute to my parents themselves.”
“One of my dearest reasons that I home school is that I want the education process of my children to be driven by “PURPOSE” and “MISSION” in all that they do. And that purpose and mission have to be in alignment with our unified family values, traditions, and standards of Black excellence. I don’t want my children following a life curriculum that serves someone else’s purpose or agenda, especially the public school system’s programming to dumb us down and subjugate us.”
“The transmission to Afrikan culture is another reason why I home school. By simply writing the short synopsis of my upbringing, I was able to reaffirm my outlook on the passing forward of culture, which affirms the “connecting of the dots” from childhood to adulthood, as being the very essence of what home schooling is truly about. Our culture is our cure. It is my spiritual compass and roadmap that begins with family and the preservation of life. As Nana Marimba Ani says, “Our culture is our immune system. It gives us a reason for survival. It is an energy source for thriving. It puts us into a system of accountability.” This is such a beautiful way of looking at it because although Afrikan culture is vast, these basic principles are at the core across most indigenous traditions.
It is not about trying to live in the past but rather to use the process of Sankofa, which means to go back and fetch it as it refers to our culture and the essence of who we are. This is often symbolised with the image of the Sankofa bird with an egg in it’s mouth which represents using our history/culture to give birth to this new generation of ideas and solutions as they fit within the context that we are living in.”
“For me, I have to give my children the principles of an Afrikan culture that will serve as a foundation and provide the mental, physical and spiritual tools, resources and mindset that allows them to actualise all dimensions of their divine purpose. Home schooling truly is the blueprint for Black Power. It is the vehicle for ensuring that my children see the world through an Afrikan perspective that binds them to their brilliance. Home Schooling is our declaration as a people to define our own “SUCCESS”, which is imperative if we are to rebuild our families, solve the problems of our community, and raise healthy and happy adults who function in Black excellence.”
Building the necessary confidence, competence and self motivation in our children can only lead to empowerment! It is not enough for my children to just be conscious. They must be conscientious in their choices and decisions with a realisation of their power to positively change the reality for our people worldwide. I have seen what high expectations complemented by the necessary resources and support can bring first hand. I have always allowed my children to learn by stage and not by age.”
