The Afro-Drum Ensemble was comprised of drummers from Nigeria, Senegal, Jamaica and America. This was the first time Art Blakey worked with African drummers. Solomon G. Ilori, one of the drummers, said Blakey made this fusion of drummers work successfully because various African aesthetic rhythms were already inside Blakey’s mind.
